Architectural Job Captain
As an architectural job captain, you are responsible for the management of an architectural production team focusing on construction drawings, site plans and submissions for the examiner. You naturally assess the skills of your delegates and effectively delegate work based on their strengths, and build on any of their weaknesses. Senior leadership counts on you for an accurate work schedule and your pragmatic input on conceptual design.
Understanding people’s work capabilities and leading them to success will be critical in your ability to grow and develop within the company. Getting the team to deliver timely, quality work with minimal errors is pivotal. Your attention to detail is paramount as you will be accountable for quality work across all your team members and often you will conduct final revisions before it is submitted outside of your department.
Rockstar candidates in this position are highly accountable and reliable individuals who regularly produce quality work on time. They understand local building codes and don’t require much oversight from senior staff with regards to error checking and architectural detailing. Rockstars are also adept at finding errors on others people’s work, especially on drawings before submission to the examiner. Great Job Captains are often held in praise and high regard by their delegates.
Your path to success lies in your understanding in scopes of work and the time it takes to deliver those construction drawings. Building relationships with examiners is an asset. A track record of scheduling in work and delivering on projects on time will highly sought after. Your ability to mentor others and get them producing better work is an asset.
Key Considerations and Requirements:
- Candidate’s portfolios that are more relevant to the portfolio of the company is an asset.
- Experience with working drawings, construction drawings and site plan drawings are more heavily considered than 3D renderings, unless stated otherwise. (please refrain from submitting portfolios that are predominantly renderings)
- Candidate’s' understanding of local building code will be heavily considered. Showcase your knowledge of building code details as eloquently as possible.
- Candidate will be responsible for the productions teams construction, working and site plan drawings with submissions to the examiners department.
- Candidate will be occasionally responsible for their own production work.
- Candidate will schedule work based on scope of work and delegate accordingly to subordinates.
- Any experience working with examiners is an asset.
- Any experience working with tribunals or adjustment committees is an asset.
- Occasional site visitations to perform measurements and site investigations including looking for deficiencies.
- Identify design problems and alert architects to any foreseeable design issues.
- Asses client requirements and work with architects to translate requirements into novel and practical design solutions. Ability to sketch ideas effectively by hand is considered an asset.
- Recommend materials and construction methods during creative processes.
- Support feasibility studies.
- Support and prepare documents pertaining to planning, site approvals and submissions to the examiner.
- Catch any issues or red flags on construction drawings and instigate action amongst peers to address or correct.
- Work with engineers to incorporate changes and updates into drawings.
- Manage documents and revisions as well as track relevant change orders and other memos.
