As a site superintendent, you are responsible for the daily operations of the construction project and accountable for all site safety. Leaders and project management will look to you to manage the daily operations amongst a number of different teams both on and off the site. Experience leading and managing professionals and all their personalities from each division of work is paramount.

Fostering and maintaining professional relationships will be critical in your ability to properly execute a construction project. The site superintendent must be versatile and flexible with strong communication skills, both written and verbal. They must be approachable, and confident in approaching others.

Key Considerations and Requirements: 

  • Experience at pre-construction including developing safety plans, assessing construction feasibility, supporting RFP and any pre-con scheduling. This also includes Identifying risks to the construction schedule including raising awareness to time impacts & developing risk mitigation plans.
  • Fully responsible for construction activities on site including but not limited to all divisions. Familiar overseeing various trades and foremen from all divisions, including but not limited to earthworks, excavation, backfill, foundations, shoring, piling, concrete forming & falseworks, rebar, structural erection,framing, roofing, interiors and finishes and depending on job site, mechanical trades, electrical trades and plumbing trades.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with a demonstrated ability for making teams to work effectively together. Understands the political nuances of fostering strong relationships with trades, office, engineering and architectural teams.
  • Support the development of construction schedules.
  • Create and update bi-weekly look ahead schedules with emphasis on identifying risks to the schedule and coming up with backup plans.
  • Sequence work and logistics such that there is minimal interruption to the construction site and that work is scheduled in the safest way possible.
  • Experienced to quickly handle any adjustments to site conditions and schedule changes appropriately. 
  • Chair meetings with trades and stakeholders to ensure that all parties understand the work scope and agree to project execution. Continuously chair meetings with trades, get updates on project progression, perform site investigations for and hold trades accountable for quality work and deadlines.
  • Ensure that workers, vendors, and trades act safely and in harmony, including arranging and sequencing manpower, equipment, and material so that all activities progress un-interrupted.
  • Frequent reviews of drawings and contractual document with respect to site situations and schedule, catching technical issues and red flags in drawings & contract requirements before they become problems on site, or threatens the schedule.
  • Strong record keeping especially with respect to Change orders and change requests and if work is straying from contractual agreements or drawings.
  • Involved with change management, defending, vetting, and countering change orders, and verifying CO and CR impact on cost and schedule.
  • Records and maintains site logs & office documentation and checking trade tickets / certifications as well as ensuring that the trades are up to date.
  • Safety assessments include overseeing toolbox talks and safety walks, conducting & enforcing safety audits.
  • Must be highly experienced in and monitoring contractor and employee workmanship and performance and must be able to intervene when required and enforce quality and performance expectations.
  • Very experienced in identifying deficiencies and work to close them before major milestones are reached.
  • Provide consistent feedback to all personnel to enforce positive morale and to develop the team. Must be open to provide coaching, mentorship and job shadowing to intermediate or junior staff where and when required.

Project Management:

  • Chair meetings with trades and stakeholders to ensure that all parties understand the work scope and agree to project execution. Continuously chair meetings with trades, get updates on project progression, perform site investigations and hold trades accountable for quality work and deadlines.
  • Address and resolve any issues or challenges that may arise during construction.

Communication:

  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with a demonstrated ability for making teams work effectively together. Understands the political nuances of fostering strong relationships with trades, office, engineering and architectural teams.
  • Provide consistent feedback to all personnel to enforce positive morale and to develop the team. Must be open to provide coaching, mentorship and job shadowing to intermediate or junior staff where and when required.
  • Provide regular project updates and reports on construction progress, highlighting any deviations from the plan.

Quality Assurance:

  • Implement and monitor quality control procedures to ensure the highest standards of workmanship.  Intervene when required and enforce quality and performance expectations.
  • Identify deficiencies and work to close them before major milestones are reached.
  • Enforce strict adherence to quality standards and specifications throughout the construction process.

Budget and Cost Control:

  • Strong record keeping especially with respect to Change Orders and Change Requests and if work is straying from contractual agreements or drawings.
  • Involved with change management, defending, vetting, and countering change orders, and verifying CO and CR impact on cost and schedule.
  • Records and maintains site logs & office documentation and checking trade tickets / certifications as well as ensuring that the trades are up to date.
  • Monitor project budgets and expenses, working to minimize costs without compromising on quality.
  • Identify and report any potential cost overruns and suggest cost-saving measures when possible.

Safety Compliance:

  • Safety assessments include overseeing toolbox talks and safety walks, conducting & enforcing safety audits.I
  • Ensure that workers, vendors, and trades act safely and in harmony, including arranging and sequencing manpower, equipment, and material so that all activities progress un-interrupted.
  • Conduct regular inspections to ensure quality control and compliance with safety regulations.
  • Implement and enforce safety protocols and standards on the construction site.
  • Conduct regular safety meetings and ensure that all personnel are trained and equipped to work safely.

Problem Solving:

  • Frequent reviews of drawings and contractual documents with respect to site situations and schedule, catching technical issues and red flags in drawings & contract before they become problems on site, or threaten the schedule.
  • Collaborate with the project team to find effective and efficient solutions to issues that may arise.

Documentation:

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date project documentation, including daily logs, progress reports, and as-built drawings.
  • Strong record keeping and documentation habits.
